By acousto-optically shifting the local oscillator in a heterodyne set-up, a spectral resolution of better than 150 mHz can be obtained. Applications of the technique to the study of interfacial phenomena are discussed.

We studied the effect of surfactant monolayers on capillary wave damping; the damping coefficient goes through a maximum at the transition between the liquid-expanded/gas coexistent region and the liquid-expanded phase.

We studied capillary wave damping on a water surface covered by long chain molecules and the effects of the heterogeneity of the monolayer.

Plainly Speaking

It has been known since antiquity that a layer of oil spread on water has a calming effect on the surface of the water. The oil spreads to form a thin layer just a single molecule thick (one ten-thousandth of the thickness of human hair). We have studied these \"monolayers\" using lasers and special microscope techniques.

Single layers of molecules find important applications in coatings, detergents, and in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, monolayers serve as a model for membranes in biological systems.
